Optical Illusions: Drawing with Dimension

Explore the art of optical illusion and create a bold, dimensional design using simple lines, shapes and contrast. Students will begin by using dot grid paper, pencils and rulers to map out a series of squares. From there, they’ll choose between two techniques to add dimension: incorporating an additional center square or creating diagonal lines.

Once the design is mapped out, students will use pencil to plan their shading, filling in alternating areas where the shapes meet the dimensional lines. Finally, fine-line permanent markers will be used to fill in the shaded sections, creating a striking black-and-white optical illusion with bold contrast and the appearance of depth.
