CLOSED Workshop – Floral Sketching and Painting

Flowers are wondrously diverse – exuberant, beautiful, mysterious, dramatic and shy. In this two-day workshop students will paint their perceptual and emotional response to flowers. Each day, the instructor will bring a variety of different flowers, as well as poems about flowers to prime the creative pump. Students will do quick-drawing and quick-painting exercises. Instructor will show how tweaking edges, color, value and composition can capture the “personality” of flowers. The workshop is more about seeing differently than technical how-tos.

Prerequisite: Beginner to intermediate experience; open to oil and acrylic painters.

Students must bring their own materials, including two surfaces (canvas and/or paper) for finished works. 

Paints recommended : titanium white, alizarin crimson (or equivalent), cadmium red, cadmium yellow light, ultramarine blue. (Do not buy paints with the word “hue” on the tube because they are much too weak.)

Brushes : at least one Flat brush and one Round brush each measuring ½ inch to one inch in width.

Metal Palette Knife : approximately as long as your finger, straight on both edges, and flexible.

Surfaces: Canvas or paper surfaces are fine. Size: no smaller than 12 inches on any side. Bring 2-3 surfaces for the workshop.

Instructor will provide sketch books, pencils, and surfaces for quick-painting exercise.

Note: There will be a 30 minute break for lunch so please bring your food and drink.
