Introduction to East Asian Brush Painting

Artist Dawn Wicklow

This workshop is perfect for anyone who has never painted before, as well as those who have experience in other mediums and are curious about this ancient art form. Dawn will teach you the basic differences between Eastern and Western approaches to art, You will be introduced to “The Four Treasures”, which are the ancient materials essential for painting and have remained the same for centuries: ink stone, ink stick, rice paper, and Chinese brushes. You will learn basic age-old brush strokes the Chinese Masters used which are taught through “The Four Gentlemen”: Bamboo, Grass Orchid, Plum Blossom, and Chrysanthemum.

Dawn has taught (a six-week) “Introduction to East Asian Brush Painting Workshop” in a variety of venues from North Carolina to Florida, including Appalachian State University (Craft Enrichment Program), Watauga and Ashe County Arts Councils, and the Florence Thomas Art School. Her work has been exhibited in a solo exhibit at the Jones House in Boone, NC, at the Alumni Exhibit at the Artist’s Cottage in Blowing Rock, NC, as well as various juried fine art festivals. Last year her work was exhibited in the City of Orlando Public Art Program at Leu Gardens.

Fee:$85 members/$100 non-members

SUPPLIES FEE: $5 paid directly to instructor before start of class to cover the cost of rice paper. All other supplies will be provided for use in the workshop.

Note: Students should wear old clothes or bring an apron.
